Dr. Byapti Sur

Hi, I am Byapti and I am an Assistant Professor of History. While I am currently living in Punjab, I was born in Chinsurah in Bengal. My connection with the Netherlands started there as Chinsurah was a former VOC settlement where I grew up in the midst of the ruins of Dutch factories and cemeteries in my area. In 2012, I took the decision to go to the Netherlands to study Dutch. That turned into a PhD on the Indo-Dutch connections in Leiden University accompanied by 8 years of beautiful friendships, rare books and learning and wonderful memories in the Netherlands. I came back to India in 2020 and continue to live and work here. But I still speak the language, read and write on the history of the Dutch in India and have friends from Leiden University bring fresh cheese for me whenever they meet me here or anywhere in the world!
